Freedom and the 4th: Inspiration for Celebrating

Freedom and the 4th: Inspiration for Celebrating

As we were deciding what our blog should be for July, it became apparent that Freedom fit because of the 4th of July. When we think of the 4th of July we think parades, picnics, and of course fireworks but it really is so much more! Freedom means the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint. I recently was privileged enough to go to the World War II museum in New Orleans. If you ever have the opportunity it is worth your time, learn more here! There is so much information about the war, its history, and stories of the amazing people who fought for our freedom! Something that caught my attention was the 4 freedoms from Roosevelt's speech in 1941:

"In the future days, which we seek to make secure, we look forward to a world founded upon four essential human freedoms.

The first is freedom of speech and expression -- everywhere in the world.

The second is freedom of every person to worship God in his own way -- everywhere in the world.

The third is freedom from want -- which, translated into world terms, means economic understandings which will secure to every nation a healthy peacetime life for its inhabitants -- everywhere in the world.

The fourth is freedom from fear -- which, translated into world terms, means a world-wide reduction of armaments to such a point and in such a thorough fashion that no nation will be in a position to commit an act of physical aggression against any neighbor-- anywhere in the world.

That is no vision of a distant millennium. It is a definite basis for a kind of world attainable in our own time and generation. That kind of world is the very antithesis of the so-called new order of tyranny which the dictators seek to create with the crash of a bomb."

Franklin D. Roosevelt Excerpted from the State of the Union Address to Congress, January 6th, 1941

It struck me that those words are still important today for us and our world! As we celebrate Freedom this 4th of July let’s remember to honor those that fought for our freedoms so long ago and still today and to be kind to each other as we each strive to have those 4 freedoms!

🇺🇸Check out inspiration for celebrating this month and beyond

Community:

The 4th of July brings communities together. Celebrate freedom with your neighbors, family, and friends this year, by joining in on the fun community activities happening in your area over the 4th of July. Check out this list of local MN 4th of July events here.

We celebrate at the family cabin where the whole lake community celebrates with a boat parade on the morning of the 4th of July. You can either participate by decorating your boat for the parade or posting up on your dock to cheer the parade on! The best-decorated boat wins! Believe it or not, we got 3rd place in the boat parade a couple of years ago when we transformed the pontoon into a giant Yeti Cooler and dressed up as beverages. Check it out below!

Food:

Often food is at the center of celebrations and gatherings, it has the power to bring people together. Our tradition for the 4th of July is a hot dog bar! Our toppings range from traditional like chili (find our favorite recipe here), onions, and relish to crazy like pineapple (personal fav!), mac & cheese, and pasta salad!

***Pro tip: cut your dogs in half so you can try 4 different flavor combos!

Music:

Music and celebrations go together like hot dogs and the 4th of July! Music often sparks emotions, brings forth memories, symbolizes, captures experiences, and so much more. Celebrate the 4th of July and freedom all summer long with a curated playlist! Make your own, or find an already created one on Spotify or Apple Music. To get you started, enjoy this 4th of July playlist on Spotify here.

How do you celebrate?!

Until next month, we wish you a special, safe, and memorable 4th of July!
